RESEARCH PROJECTS
In collaboration with Cooke Aquaculture, the University of New Brunswick and Atlanding we have participated in a number of research projects over the past few years.
2020
Neutralization of Triterpene Glycoside toxin naturally found in Sea Cucumbers
Analysis of Neutralization techniques and their ability to neutralize a naturally occurring toxin prior to discharge to receiving waters.
2018
Solid Waste Management for Intensive Recirculating Aquaculture Systems
Analysis of different solids management technologies including anaerobic digestion and incineration of aquaculture sludge to reduce transport costs for large scale RAS and produce a valuable product.
2018
Comparison of Three Systems for Removing Carbon Dioxide in Recirculating Salmon Smolt Hatcheries
Investigation into different methods of carbon dioxide removal technologies including air diffusers, degassing columns, and moving bed biofilters and their efficiencies with respect to CO2 removal and comparison of operating cost.
2017
Optimization and Control of Ozone Use within Recirculating Aquaculture Systems
Design and installation of safe methods of ozone injection systems and research into required ozone doses and the effect on overall water quality in the recirculating aquaculture system.
2017
Optimization of Make-up Water in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems
Modelling and optimizing make-up water requirement in RAS including the effects of utilizing a greenhouse vs an insulated building on water quality and overall solids and nutrient removal efficiencies of commonly used water treatment technologies.
2016
Optimization of Fine Solids Removal in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems
Investigated the mechanism of solids capture of static (bio)filters within the fish rearing, recirculating loop as well as optimization of operation and cleaning techniques. This research also delved into chemical treatment of wastewater from a RAS, enabling a 50% reduction in chemical usage while improving solids and nutrient capture (targeting dissolved phosphorus).
